The first step

The following posts will be an account of the steps that I will take to transform myself into what I consider an "Efficient Man."
I will seek out the best, most effective, techniques for improving my life, fitness, education, lifestyle, discipline, and motivation. I'll read the books that blow the mind, to rebuild it stronger, better, faster.

To start off, I'm a 30 year old college student, US Army veteran, 5'6, 215 lbs. I'm determined to live the best life possible. I want to leave a record of my progress, and possibly a template for those like me, who up to this point have floundered with discipline, weight, work, and friends.

I have never had a passion. No one singular over arching life goal. The closest that I can think of was to be a police officer. That goal has shifted a bit, to FBI agent. It's more of a goal than a passion.

Lately I've felt like a child when people ask me what I want to do when I graduate. I feel like they are asking "What do you want to be when you grow up?" The answer is simple, I still don't know. That's one of the reasons that I'm in a liberal arts degree. To get a taste for it all, and see what resonates me the most.

One nice thing is that since returning to school, I have the determination to do well, in my first year, I have a GPA of 3.8. What's strange is that I haven't had to work as hard as I thought I would. Maybe because it's only a junior college, where the standards are lower. But it feels good to know that I know I have more time than is necessary, and at any point I can crank it up and work harder.

On the Tim Ferris pod cast today, Peter Diamandis posed a way to find your passion with two questions.

1. What were you passionate about when you were a child?

2. If you had a billion dollars that you couldn't spend on yourself, but had to use to improve the world, how would you spend the money?

My answer for the first question is that I wanted to be a scientist, but that no longer interests me.
Why? This will need more introspection.

The second question. I think that education reform needs to improved. From the way we teach elementary school kids all the way to college students are treated. I fully believe in the usefulness of a liberal education as a way of being a fully effective man.

I suspect that this journey is just that, a journey and not a destination. I'm starting a new lifestyle that will never be complete, there will always be something new to learn or something old to improve. I'm glad you're here sharing it with me.
